Our Biggest Android Update Ever

by | Nov 13, 2020 | Gas Engineer Software

As you may know, we’ve been working hard on an update for the Android app – our biggest ever, in fact. This update addresses a lot of user feedback we’ve had over the years, as well as adding new and improved features across the board, and we’re confident that you’ll love it when it’s rolled out to everybody.

We have had a few questions from users regarding why we’re choosing to make these changes now, so we thought we’d make a quick post and fill you in on the background of this decision.

Google Regulations

This is an important, technical reason to update the app now. Our old Android app uses 32-bit libraries, which will soon become incompatible with Google’s regulations – according to new requirements (which you can read here if you really like the technical side of things), only 64-bit libraries will be supported by Android starting August 1, 2021.

A big part of the update we’re working on is the swap from a 32-bit to a 64-bit library, as if we did nothing our current app would become unavailable on the Google Play Store from that date. This also future-proofs the software, as certain newer devices only support 64-bit apps.

As an added bonus, 64-bit provides you with a faster, richer experience across devices!

Drastically Improved Sync Times

We’ll always do what we can to improve the sync times in-app, as our main goal is saving you as much time as possible when you’re out on a job. Using the power of the most recent Android system updates, we’ve completely remodelled the networking layer of the app, meaning the time it takes to sync your data is drastically reduced.

Improvements to Photo Quality and PDFs

With the new tools available to us, we’ve been able to noticeably improve the quality of any photos you send through the app. You’ll now also be able to preview certificate PDFs, use gestures to zoom in and out on them, and edit them on the go – a much-requested feature that’s only possible thanks to this big update.

Integration With Gas Analysers

As you may have seen, our iOS users are now able to integrate Gas Engineer Software with Anton gas analysers, pulling and attaching report data to certificates at the push of a button. The Android update gives us the ability to introduce this feature to Android users as well – you’ll notice immediately how much easier this is than manually copying data across from the analyser to the app.

We also have plans to integrate with Kane analysers in future, although we’re not quite ready to announce a date yet!

Hopefully this gives you a better idea of why we’re working so hard on updating the app, and why we’re so eager to do it sooner rather than later. We’re grateful to those of you who have tried the new app already, and provided your thoughts and feedback – your support is valued and appreciated. Check back soon for more product updates!

Kind Regards
